A project for a family who loved their neighborhood but not their house.  The family had outgrown the tiny kitchen and had little space to entertain friends.  The house is a 1958 era split level with three distinct levels.  A new addition out the back creates a family focused area composed of a kitchen, an eating area and a family room with a large play room below.  The house’s unique location backing up to the local elementary school suggested a back door mud room to collect the children’s coats and backpacks.  The clerestory windows above the center of the family room brought natural light further into the expanded second floor and created a focal point for the room and beacon at the back of the house.
